Just finished the game, I missed two cristals in the last level, other than that I think I did everything.
It's a very cool experimental game. You find power ups and go exploring a non linear level design form more power ups. It's challenging and forces you to master the game controls. It's clunky, but that's part of mastering it.
I myself have developed a similar game in the past (ikokku bridge to dreamland) and i think you could say it's about "understanding the game rules and solving mechanincal puzzles within it", that means the puzzles are about "how do i make this specific jump?" or "is it better to use this power up now or a couple frames later?" or even "Which parts of the terrain can I use to get higher?" instead of traditional cryptical puzzles.
I recommend it, specially if you want to understand better what makes a game design work. You don't need overcomplicated fighting sistems or fancy graphics, nonthing that the industry makes nowadays. You just need a set of interconected rules and to challenge the player to solve puzzles with those rules. It's a very minimalistic game per say. Yet, a very interesting one.
I haven't finished it yet but it's very cool so far.
Edit: I finished it and collected all crystals.
The game is really cool, game has very strong style that made me really enjoy the game.
-Music was really good.
-I love the art style.
-I love the announcer when collecting power crystals or gaining new powers.
-Pause menu is awesome (It could be cooler if metallic man would slightly change pose depending on what you selected on the menu)
But there are some things that I would improve/add.
-On the first level I didn't notice that platform you need to jump on to get the first ability. I got it by getting the worm to launch me to it.
-I would make the first ability and attack rotate you to the direction of the walk input (it's sometimes a bit annoying when you realize that you forgot to rotate to the right direction and end up missing the jump)
-I don't know if its a but or not but there is no sound when hitting the enemies I would add some (its always better if player get feedback from successful action)
-Also combat could be a bit better, maybe some 3 hit combo or getting slightly launched up or just stoping you from falling when hitting an enemy in the air would be cool.
-make that you can destroy the statue on the second level.
- I would love if there was a button that would make metallic man strike a random pose. (I would love to do that to the rhythm of music)
-I would love to see more of this game overall. Maybe a cutscene when entering new level for the first time and see metal men interacting with some characters or commenting about the place, give him a rival like plasma man or stardust woman that wants to collect all the cool crystals for themself and have a bossfight at the end or something idk, I just would love to see more of this game.
thanks for the feedback! i am excited at the idea of something more fleshed out eventually as this was just a game jam project but i got very invested in it as i was working on it
On my 2nd playthrough (100% again) I found a that after starting new game you still have double jump unlocked. There were also some stutters when dialog was loading. That's all bugs I found maybe I will find more on my 3rd playthrough. Hope you best.
